The Perdiz is a partridge-like bird that closely resembles the quail in size and shape.  Unlike the quail, the Perdiz are not found in coveys.  They are instead chased down in singles and pairs in the grassy pasturelands of western Uruguay—where the best Perdiz hunting in Uruguay can be found—however, they can be found in fields everywhere throughout the country.

Upland bird hunting in Uruguay is one of the most sought after wingshooting trips in South America, and one of the most traditional.  Aristocrats in Uruguay have been Perdiz hunting for many generations, and many of the local hunters take great pride in having a fine kennel of pointing dogs.  In fact, there is even a field trial community in Uruguay, something else that sets it apart from the Argentina Perdiz hunting community.

Although the Perdiz is the only bird that is hunted by the public in Uruguay—Uruguayans do not hunt doves, pigeons, and rarely ducks—one need not worry about the population of birds being shot out, there are simply too many of them, and not enough hunters, both local and otherwise, to make any significant impact on reducing their numbers.

In the grand history of Uruguay wingshooting, which is not very notable until only recently, Perdiz hunting has been the staple and mainstay of the hunting outfitters in Uruguay.  Their European friends would venture to South America to hunt with them, and that is where it pretty much ended—but not anymore.

Today, Argentina bird hunting has become so popular, that its overflow has spread into Uruguay, not for environmental reasons, however.  Argentina duck and dove hunting is still “unspoiled” by even modest standards, but the popularity of bird hunting in South America has exploded, and many anglers and hunters desire new destinations with a slightly different twist on the same old classic.

Enter Uruguay hunting.  What better place to go for a taste of Argentina with a twist.  The Uruguayans speak with a similar accent, share the same tastes for delicious beef and fine red wine, and above all, the Perdiz hunting in Uruguay, and every other type of wingshooting for that matter, is off the charts excellent!
